Windows 10 Update Error 0x800f081f: When Windows Cannot Find the Source Files It Needs

An update or a Windows feature refuses to install, and the code 0x800f081f appears. The Windows 10 update error 0x800f081f is especially common when adding the .NET Framework 3.5 or applying cumulative YYPAUS updates on damaged systems.

The code means Windows could not find the source files required to complete the change. It looked in its own component store and online, and came up empty.

Repairing the component store or pointing Windows at a known good source usually solves it.

The same code can appear in the output of the DISM repair tool itself, which can be confusing, because the tool meant to repair the problem reports the problem. The solution in that case is to give DISM a different source.

Why This Happens

The source files go missing for these reasons:

  • The Windows component store is damaged.
  • The PC is set to use a company update server that does not provide optional components.
  • Required files were removed by aggressive cleanup tools.
  • The PC cannot reach Windows Update to fetch the files.

The error frequently appears alongside .NET Framework 3.5 installation attempts.

Start With These Basic Checks

Make sure Windows can reach its own sources.

  1. Restart the PC and confirm the internet connection works.
  2. Install any other pending updates first.
  3. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
  4. Disconnect VPNs and disable proxy settings.
  5. Try the failed update or feature again.

If the error persists, the component store needs attention.

Going a Step Further

Repair Windows with DISM, using installation media if necessary.

  1. Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth in an administrator Command Prompt.
  2. If DISM itself reports 0x800f081f, download the Windows 10 ISO from Microsoft using the Media Creation Tool.
  3. Right-click the ISO and choose Mount. Note the drive letter, for example E.
  4. Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:E:\sources\install.wim:1 /LimitAccess, adjusting the drive letter. If the folder contains install.esd, use esd in place of wim.
  5. When DISM succeeds, run sfc /scannow and try the update again.

The number after install.wim refers to the edition inside the image. If the first one fails, the image may hold several editions, and the correct number can be found with DISM’s /Get-WimInfo option.

A Word of Caution

Use only an ISO downloaded from Microsoft that matches your Windows 10 version and language. Mixing versions can produce further errors. Keep the ISO mounted until DISM finishes, and back up important files before major repairs.

Wrapping Up

Error 0x800f081f means the files Windows needs are missing or unreachable. A DISM repair, sometimes with a mounted Windows image as the source, fixes the large majority of cases.

Once the repair succeeds, check for updates once more. Several updates that failed earlier may install in a single pass now that the missing files are available.
